My third year of engineering was about the same. I managed decent scores in the department, participated and held positions at various institute level events. One incident that was remarkable, though unfortunate, is the arson of the institute bus when we were returning from the Varanasi Raliway station. We were having our institute cultural festival, Spandan, and I was the responsibe for managing transportation. I had this institute bus under my charge and we had gone to pick up the visiting students from some college. Eventually those students did not come and we were returning without anyone. It was also the student council election time in BHU and there was a lot of tension and rioting going on in the BHU campus. We never bothered about it till a huge group of BHU students surrounded the bus moments after we entered the campus. They forced the bus driver to take the bus in front of a hostel where they drove him away by force. I was trying to pacify the mob leaders when all of a sudden stone pelting on the bus started. The window pane glass came all over me and best thing was to run and save oneself, which we all promptly did. I saw the bus being first damaged and then burnt. I had a tense night after reporting the incident to the professors and the organising committee. The next day BHU was closed sine die and reopened only after one and a half months later. Vishal had joined IT BHU in Mechanical engineering department. We met often, and always had something to discuss about. Vishal, with his completely revolutionary outlook of life, always perplexed me. I was always trying to tell him to be like all the other normal students or else face wrath of more than strict professors in the Mechanical engineering department. I became friends with his two close friends in his department, Kaku and Shashank. Kaku was one guy I was impressed with from the very beginning. Highly focused, he always seemed to know what he wanted to do and did it rather well! He achieved unparalleled honours and accolades at IT BHU! I still have a lot to learn from him. Shashank was always a solid friend. My last year at IT BHU is one I remember most vividly. It had a very eventful start. Our campus recruitment started and I got a placement offer from TCS (Tata consultancy Services) on just the third day! It was like a dream come true, even though TCS was not my dream company. Free from the tension of securing a good job, I relaxed for the rest of semester, helping other students in whatever way I could with the campus recruitment. It was the last semester, on Jan 17th, that we had the Matchstix fate. I came late to the fete only to be told by my friends that some girl was looking for me! fantastic, I thought! and thats when I met Debjani, who I would later find out to be the love of my life. Though very outgoing, I never would approach a girl in my first meeting. In this case, I did exactly that...I approached her and she reciprocated...the rest is history. We started meeting and were in love (or that we thought so!) very soon. My evenings at the ghats took a different meaning and I was always waiting for those romantic rendezvous! motorcycle ride from Mughalsarai to BHU, scooter drive to Sarnath, evenings at Assi ghat and having coffee at Ya cafe, time spent at Tulsi and, Dasasumegh ghat, day out at church with friends and Debu...they all are as alive in my memory as they happened yesterday!. I and my friends also came close to two of Debu's friends - Vinee and Mahua. Vinee is now my other sister and a close friend! Anin and Shalu were two other great girls whom I had a chance to know. |
